The narrator fails to make the polo team -- he has never ridden a horse, but wants to get in with the college "in" crowd. -- He is saved from his fall off the horse and derision by the only black kid in school, Rufus, doubling as the team's stable boy. The conclusion will surprise all but Rufus and the narrator.
